Sigismondo Castromediano Museum: A Journey Through the History of Salento

Autore: Redazione 10/09/2025 14:12

The Sigismondo Castromediano Museum in Lecce is the oldest museum in Puglia and the perfect gateway to understanding the rich and complex history of Salento.

Founded in 1868 thanks to the donation of his archaeological collection by Duke and patriot Sigismondo Castromediano, the museum is a true treasure chest preserving thousands of years of history, from the Bronze Age to the modern era.

Collections: From Archaeology to Art

The museum’s layout unfolds across several sections, offering visitors a fascinating journey back through time, where each room tells a different chapter of the region’s past.

Archaeological Section

This is the heart of the museum and features the oldest artifacts unearthed from the major archaeological sites of Salento. Highlights include:

  • Prehistoric and Messapian artifacts – vases, weapons, and jewelry that illustrate the life, craftsmanship, and beliefs of this ancient pre-Roman civilization.
  • Roman-era finds – sculptures, mosaics, and everyday objects that narrate the story of Brundisium, Lupiae, and other Roman settlements in the area.
  • Numismatic Collection – a valuable assemblage of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine coins, offering insight into the trade networks and economic exchanges that once animated the ancient Mediterranean.

Art Gallery and Decorative Arts

The museum also houses a rich art gallery featuring works from the 15th to the 19th centuries, with a focus on local masters and the Neapolitan school. Among the highlights are paintings attributed to Titian and Veronese, standing alongside works by regional artists.

A section dedicated to decorative arts showcases exquisite examples of ceramics, majolica, and liturgical objects, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship that has long distinguished the Salento area.
