Museum of Paper and Watermarks: the ancient art of Fabriano

Autore: Redazione 20/09/2025 14:43

The Museum of Paper and Watermarks in Fabriano, in the Marche region, is not just an exhibition but a true time machine that brings to life one of Italy’s oldest and most treasured traditions. The museum celebrates the craft of the master papermakers who, since the 13th century, have made Fabriano world-famous for the production of high-quality paper.

An interactive journey through the history of paper

The museum offers a fascinating experience that blends history with hands-on learning. The guided tour usually begins with an explanation of the origins of paper in China and its arrival in Europe. The heart of the experience is the live demonstration of handmade paper production. Visitors can watch the creation of a sheet of paper using the same tools and techniques as medieval papermakers.

The exhibition continues with:

  • Watermarks: the museum holds an extensive collection of historical watermarks — a mark of security and authenticity perfected by Fabriano over the centuries.
  • Period machinery: ancient machines and tools are displayed to illustrate the various stages of production, from the processing of paper pulp to the drying of the sheets.
  • The Wax Room: a unique section featuring documents and exhibits that narrate the history of the museum and Fabriano’s papermaking tradition.
