In the heart of the enchanting island of Ortigia, in Syracuse, lies a true gem for movie enthusiasts — the Remo Romeo Cinema Museum.
This extraordinary space is not just a museum, but a time machine that takes visitors on a captivating journey through the history of cinema, from the age of pre-cinema experiments to the innovations of the modern screen.
Founded in 1995 by Professor Remo Romeo, a distinguished figure in the cultural and artistic panorama of Sicily and recipient of the Silver Medal of Merit from the President of the Italian Republic, the museum was born from his lifelong passion for the art of filmmaking and his desire to preserve a cinematic heritage of immense historical value.
After a period of reorganization, this remarkable collection reopened to the public in its new and evocative home — the former Church of the Knights of Malta, a location that combines historical atmosphere with the magic of film.
Covering an exhibition area of about 2,000 square meters, the museum offers an immersive experience that celebrates the technological and artistic evolution of cinema.
With more than 10,000 artifacts, it is among the most important film collections in Southern Italy.
Visitors can admire:
🎞️ Magic lanterns and pre-cinema devices – tracing the origins of moving images through 18th- and 19th-century optical experiments.
🎥 Silent and sound film cameras – masterpieces of engineering that captured the earliest moments of cinematic history.
📽️ Vintage projectors – whose intricate lenses and mechanisms brought early films to life.
⚙️ Editing tables, lenses, titling machines, and other professional tools used in the making of films.
In addition to machinery, the museum serves as a living archive of cinematic memory. It houses:
