Free entry to Tuscany's state museums — 3 May 2026

The Regional Directorate for National Museums of Tuscany has announced free admission to most state cultural sites for Sunday 3 May 2026 (the first Sunday of the month). Note that many venues will still require paid entry on 1 May.

Main openings and highlights

  • Florence — Museo di San Marco: the Sala del Beato Angelico has reopened with 33 panels; on the first floor there is a special section of the exhibition Rothko a Firenze, and the Michelozzo Library hosts the dossier exhibition Il Bestiario fantastico. The Cenacolo di Sant'Apollonia, the Cenacolo di Andrea del Sarto and the Chiostro dello Scalzo will be visitable on 1 and 3 May. The Cenacolo del Fuligno will be open only on 1 May.
  • Arezzo: all state museums remain open. The exhibition continues at the Museo archeologico Gaio Cilnio Mecenate; the Museo di Casa Vasari offers free guided tours on 3 May at 10:30 and 11:30. The Basilica of San Francesco is also visitable.
  • Elba Island (Portoferraio): the National Museum of the Napoleonic Residences, Villa S. Martino, will be open.
  • Livorno: the Castiglioncello Archaeological Museum is open on 3 May.
  • Pistoia: free entry to the Fortezza di Santa Barbara, the former Church of Tau and the Oratory of San Desiderio.
  • Prato: the Comeana archaeological area — Tumulo di Montefortini is visitable.
  • Chiusi (Siena): the National Etruscan Museum offers an exhibition path on Etruscan civilization, open on 3 May.

Validity: free admission applies for the whole day on 3 May 2026 (00:00–23:59:59). Some events, guided tours or specific areas may require booking or have limited capacity: check the museum's official website or contact the venue directly before your visit for up-to-date schedules and access rules.
