Open Monuments 2026: over 800 free sites to explore

From 18 April to 8 November 2026 the 30th edition of Open Monuments (Monumenti Aperti) will offer free access to more than 800 sites across 18 Italian regions, including historic buildings, crypts and local museums.

What to expect

  • Free guided tours led by local guides, students and volunteers.
  • Programs that highlight lesser-known heritage and promote community involvement.
  • Distributed calendar with openings and events across spring, summer and autumn.

Key stops and highlights

The program kicks off in April from Cagliari and includes special attention to Sardinia in May, with notable events in Perugia in June. After the summer break the schedule resumes in September from Gravellona Toce and continues through October and November in cities such as Turin, Ferrara, Rome, Venice, Milan and Chieti.

  • Featured sites this year: Teatro Marrucino, the Urban Art Museum of Migrations, Palazzina Marfisa d'Este.
  • In Sardinia: the Necropolis of Tuvixeddu (Cagliari).
  • In Turin: the Merchants' Chapel (Cappella dei Mercanti).
  • Routes extend to natural-heritage areas like the Pollino National Park, where landscape and culture meet.

Visitor tips

  • Check the local schedule: opening times and available visits depend on each municipality.
  • Reservations: some guided tours require advance booking or have limited places; consult the official local calendar.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring an ID, arrive early and follow guides' instructions.

Open Monuments offers a practical way to discover Italy's cultural assets and to foster community participation around historic sites. Check local listings to plan your free visits and make the most of the program.
