Just a few kilometers from the heavenly beaches of San Teodoro, where the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea caress white sands, hides a completely different universe that few tourists know: Monte Nieddu and its Rio Pitrisconi. This granite sanctuary of the Gallura region represents the most authentic and primitive soul of northern Sardinia, a world where fresh water dances among millenary rocks, creating spectacles of rare beauty.
The approach to this mountain eden begins from the SS125 that connects Olbia to San Teodoro. Once past the town center, a dirt road (signs for "Monte Nieddu") leads through stretches of cork trees and myrtle bushes to a small natural parking area where the adventure on foot begins. The trail, well-marked but wild, requires trekking shoes and a minimum of hiking experience.
The first steps along the rocky track immediately reveal the dramatic personality of this territory. Granite megaliths stand like natural towers, sculpted by millennia of impetuous winds and seasonal rains that have created fantastical shapes and mysterious crevices. The mountain air, fragrant with helichrysum and wild broom, fills the lungs with a crystalline purity that contrasts sharply with the marine atmosphere of the coast below.
The first encounter with the Rio Pitrisconi is a magical and unforgettable moment. The torrent materializes suddenly among the rocks, flowing with a musical gurgle that echoes between the granite walls. Its icy waters have carved out, over the centuries, natural pools of breathtaking beauty: emerald pools with sandy bottoms where it is possible to immerse oneself completely, enjoying a regenerating sensation that erases all fatigue from the trail.
The spectacular waterfalls that punctuate the course of the torrent offer water spectacles of varying intensity depending on the season. In spring, when the rains generously feed the Rio, the water jumps become true liquid curtains that plunge into crystalline basins, creating iridescent sprays that are lost in the lush vegetation.
For adrenaline lovers, the Rio Pitrisconi offers guided canyoning tours (specialized center "Sardinia Adventures" in San Teodoro, reservation recommended). From the summit of Monte Nieddu, reachable via a more challenging trail, the panorama embraces the entire Gallura coast: from the La Maddalena archipelago to the mountains of Corsica that stand majestically on the northern horizon.
