In Posillipo, a renowned district of Naples, lies a real gem, a corner of paradise just a stone's throw from the city. The road leading to the sea, Via Marechiaro, is winding and sloping, with stairways tucked away in hidden corners that serve as shortcuts, offering a preview of the spectacular view that awaits at the bottom.
What to expect
It is a lively neighborhood, full of life and where the tradition of Naples can be breathed in deeply. The atmosphere is almost rarefied, giving the impression of being in a timeless Italian cliché. Once you arrive at the bottom, the view is wonderful. Here you will not find sandy beaches or crowded establishments, but rocks, boats, and the sea, with the scent of salt in the air as a backdrop.
Poetry, music, and art
The undisputed symbol of the place is undoubtedly “a Fenestella,” a small window that inspired Salvatore di Giacomo in his famous Marechiare. The window overlooks the sea, and below it is a piece of the score of the Neapolitan artist's masterpiece. But he is not alone: artists of the new generation such as Nu Genea and Liberato have also taken inspiration from this place, one of the last remaining authentically romantic spots.
The most authentic sea in Naples
At the bottom, there is a small cove where fishermen set sail and where you can rent kayaks and canoes. However, most people choose to lay their towels on the rocks and relax there, with the sea crashing right below them. From there, the landscape is spectacular, with Capri visible in the distance and the famous Palazzo degli Spiriti, around which myths and legends revolve. There are also beach establishments, such as the “Il Gabbiano” lido, with its platform visible from everywhere. During the day, it is only accessible with an exclusive seasonal pass, but in the evening it becomes a special setting for unforgettable events. It is the perfect place for special occasions, with an elegant indoor hall and a wonderful outdoor area overlooking the breathtaking view that only Marechiaro can offer.
How to get there
In summer, the road leading to it is a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), which can only be accessed with authorization from the parking lots at the bottom. It is advisable to walk down the road, using the steps as shortcuts, or take bus 622, which is probably the best option.
Marechiaro is not just any place: it is a feeling that remains intact, where the sea whispers poetry and inspires poets. We recommend everyone visit this corner of paradise.
