Lombardy launches law to protect historic mills

The Regional Council of Lombardy has approved a law aimed at safeguarding and promoting 708 historic mills across the region. The measure seeks to protect rural heritage, support local tourism and encourage reuse for renewable energy.

Developed with input from local authorities, associations and volunteers, the law establishes coordinated actions to turn these assets into cultural and economic opportunities.

• Regional census and mapping of mill sites;
• Grants and simplification measures for restoration and reactivation of historic structures;
• Integration of mills into historic and tourist routes and creation of a regional network with an identifying brand;
• Encouragement of participation in renewable energy communities where feasible;
• Regional Week of Historic Mills, to be held in May alongside the European Mills Days, featuring visits, workshops and an award for top projects;
• Initial funding: €200,000 per year for the 2026–2028 three‑year period to support promotion and recovery activities.

Authorities present the law as a cross‑sectoral tool involving culture, tourism, education and energy, intended to preserve local identity and create new development paths for the territory.
