Dino Island: a fragment of paradise in the Tyrrhenian Sea

Autore: Redazione 20/09/2025 14:39

Praia a Mare wakes up every morning with this green jewel floating just a few meters from the shore, as if someone had forgotten a piece of Eden in the deep blue of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian Sea. Dino Island (Isola di Dino) is not just a rocky outcrop: it is a world in miniature where every corner hides surprises that make your heart pound like a child's before a hidden treasure.

The landing with local fishing boats is an adventure in itself. The sea here changes color every hundred meters: from the brilliant turquoise of the shallow waters to the deep blue where the seabeds drop towards mysterious abysses. During the navigation, curious dolphins often accompany the boats with playful jumps that bring smiles even to the most skeptical, while the scent of the sea mixes with that of the Mediterranean scrub that covers every centimeter of the islet.

Once you disembark, the main path climbs among thorny prickly pears and fragrant mastic trees, while green lizards dart quickly among the warm stones. The silence here has a particular quality: only the rustling of the wind through the leaves and the distant sound of waves breaking on the rocks create a natural soundtrack that instantly relaxes you.

But the real spectacle is the sea caves that pepper the coast like secret eyes. The Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) offers breathtaking plays of light: the water becomes a liquid kaleidoscope where every reflection creates shades of blue that seem to have come from a mad painter's palette. The echo of voices bounces off the rocky walls, creating a surreal effect, while small silver fish dart in the crystalline waters like moon shards fallen from the sky.

The Arco di Dino (Dino Arch), a natural sculpture shaped by millennia of waves and wind, frames glimpses of infinite sea that make you want to dive in immediately. The water here is so transparent that you can see the rocky seabeds even at five meters deep, populated by purplish sea urchins and orange starfish that look like flowers blooming on the bottom.

The return to the mainland, as the sun begins to set behind the coastal mountains, offers the last emotion of the day: the islet transforms into a dark silhouette against the fiery sky, while the lights of Praia a Mare begin to turn on like little stars fallen onto the shore.

Organize your visit with the boatmen at the port of Praia a Mare, who know every cove and every story of this small paradise. Bring a mask and fins to explore the seabeds, an underwater camera, and most importantly, plenty of time: here, every minute is golden, and haste is the worst enemy of wonder. Dino Island will remain in your heart like a waking dream you will never want to forget.
