The Salt Pans of Marsala and Lo Stagnone: sunsets, windmills, and islands suspended in time

Autore: Redazione 30/08/2025 10:19

There is a place in Sicily that seems to belong to another dimension. It is not just a landscape. Here, time slows down, colors intensify, and every detail tells a story that combines nature, tradition, and poetry: this is the area of the Saline di Marsala (Salt Pans of Marsala).

Walking along the salt basins, the mounds of salt rise up purely white, especially in summer, forming small white mountains. The windmills recall centuries of labor. The sensory experience of walking alongside the basins offers views that look like paintings.

At sunset, the salt pans are transformed, as the water turns pink, orange, and gold, and the shadows of the windmills lengthen, creating a theatrical atmosphere that captivates photographers and visitors from all over the world. It is arguably one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Sicily.

The Stagnone Lagoon is a protected marine area located in front of the salt pans that safeguards natural and archaeological beauty. The Island of Mozia in particular stands out among the channels of the islets and is an ancient Phoenician colony. This place tells not only of natural beauty but also of history that can be felt among its archaeological sites and museums.

Lo Stagnone is also a perfect refuge for animals and migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The salt pans, as the name suggests, were an ancient collection point, and salt was once considered "white gold." By visiting them, you can discover the ancient harvesting technique that is still handed down today, and purchase the celebrated integral sea salt.

There are many experiences you can have there, including a boat trip in the lagoon, a sunset walk, and a tasting of sweet wines like Marsala, which takes its name from this very place.

The Saline di Marsala and Lo Stagnone are much more than a tourist attraction; they are a journey into Sicily that provides a different kind of emotion compared to the usual well-known spots. A trip to Sicily is only complete after having lived this experience.
