The pyramids of Zone: a lunar landscape sculpted by time

Autore: Redazione 24/08/2025 18:49

A few kilometers from Lake Iseo, in the heart of Valcamonica, a small geological masterpiece is hidden away, one that looks like it's from another planet, with its lunar landscapes. The Zone Pyramids Nature Reserve features extraordinary formations called earth pyramids or fairy chimneys, which are the result of millennia of erosion by water and time. Here, nature becomes the artist, almost a Michelangelo, creating a truly unique scenario in Italy.

The pyramids rise up to 30 meters, like clay towers topped by large boulders called "caps" ("i cappelli"), which protect them from erosion. This phenomenon began with the retreat of the glaciers, but it is still evolving. The rains, in fact, continually shape the moraine terrain, giving rise to new forms and modifying existing ones. This creates a natural amphitheater, set within a conifer forest, ensuring that the whole area is surrounded by brilliant green, especially in summer.

The path for exploring the reserve is accessible and well-marked, winding among the pyramids and offering breathtaking views. The most beautiful views are those over Lake Iseo, and along the way, there are many information panels that tell the geological history of the place, which we are describing to you. The pyramids of Zone are not just a natural attraction but an invitation to reflect on how powerful nature is and how much it can influence the surrounding landscape.

It is the perfect place for a day trip, also given how easy it is to get there. It is, in fact, easily reachable from Cislano, a frazione (hamlet) of Zone, and has nearby parking. It is also ideal as a base for a subsequent visit to Lake Iseo or the rock carvings of Capo di Ponte. It is a hidden, almost unexpected, corner of Lombardy, but one that offers emotions that few other places in Lombardy can provide.
