The Selva Piana Mines and the Carpinone Waterfalls

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:58

In Molise, there is an area that encompasses mystery and natural beauty, a little-known but surprising itinerary. This is the Carpinone Waterfalls and the Selvapiana mines area, a few kilometers from Isernia. The route starts from the village of Carpinone: from here, a loop trail winds until it reaches the waterfalls, which are the absolute protagonists of the place. They are clear and scenic cascades, among which the Schiumarella waterfall stands out, which spectacularly plunges among the rocks with its force.

It is an ideal opportunity to take postcard photos or simply to stop and listen to the sound of the water hitting the rocks. But a little further on, immersed in nature, you find traces of human settlement, especially of an industrial type. In fact, the old Selvapiana iron mines are present and visible, having been abandoned for decades.

Here, among rusty tracks, semi-closed tunnels, and stone walls covered with moss, time seems to have stopped, and a unique atmosphere is breathed. It is a true journey into the past, where miners worked hard to bring home what was necessary to support their families. It is not uncommon here to meet groups of hikers who gather to reach the peaks. They are mainly enthusiasts of off-the-radar trekking.

It is a perfect destination for a day trip, especially for those coming from Isernia or for those vacationing there for a few days. What makes this place special is precisely the fact that it is hybrid, a perfect mix of wild romanticism, forgotten history, and clear waters.

Molise, as always, even if it doesn't always seem so, manages to surprise and prove to be more than what people think. It is an excellent idea for lovers of trekking, local legends, and places that leave a mark.
