The Celano Gorges: a fissure in time

Autore: Redazione 20/09/2025 10:16

Among the Sirente-Velino mountains, nature has sculpted a geological masterpiece that defies the imagination: the Gole di Celano (Celano Gorges). Here, millennia of erosion have carved the limestone rock like an ancient sculptor, creating a dramatic fissure that snakes into the heart of the Abruzzo mountain.

The entrance to the gorges presents itself as a threshold to the unknown. The rock walls rise vertically for over two hundred meters, narrowing in places to let only a thin ribbon of blue sky pass through. Walking along the bottom of this primordial fissure offers unique sensations: the muffled silence amplifies every step, every breath, while the temperature gently drops, providing a natural coolness even on the most scorching summer days.

The Foce River, the liquid soul of this stone labyrinth, murmurs ancient melodies as it flows between polished boulders and crystalline pools. Its waters, laden with minerals dissolved during their long subterranean journey, shine with emerald reflections that dance on the rocky surfaces. The constant humidity has created a particular microclimate: delicate ferns cling to the rock fissures, while velvety mosses cover every surface, creating a green carpet that seems straight out of a medieval fairy tale.

The ecosystem of the gorges harbors surprising biological treasures. Spectacled salamanders silently glide between the damp stones, while small freshwater crabs build their shelters among the smooth pebbles. In the deepest pools, native trout dart quickly, silver shadows that attest to the purity of these mountain waters.

The Special Nature Reserve that protects this corner of earthly paradise offers well-marked trails that allow you to explore every recess of this geological wonder. The main route, about three kilometers long, is a journey through constantly changing scenery: from the narrowest bottlenecks, where the walls almost touch, to the wider spaces where the light filters generously, illuminating natural amphitheatres of rare beauty.

Practical Information

  • Access: From Celano, follow signs for Ovindoli to the reserve entrance. Free parking is available at the visitor center.
  • Seasonality: Open year-round, but the best experience is from April to October. In summer, the internal temperature remains cool ($15^\circ\text{C}$–$20^\circ\text{C}$).
  • Gear: Non-slip footwear is mandatory; a light jacket is recommended. A flashlight is useful for the shadier sections.
  • Duration: 2–3 hours for the complete route, with photo stops recommended at every turn.

The Gole di Celano are not simply a hiking trail, but a pilgrimage through the geological history of our planet, where every step reveals new secrets guarded by millions of years of patient work by water on stone.
