Screaming, icy water. That's the first memory you'll take home from the Raganello Gorges (Gole del Raganello), in the heart of the Pollino Park. The torrent descends furiously from the Calabrian mountains, having carved a canyon up to 400 meters deep for millennia, splitting the rocks like a sharp blade.
The journey starts from Civita, an Albanian village perched on a rocky spur where chants in the arbëreshë language still resonate. The trail begins innocently, but after a few steps, the world changes: the limestone walls squeeze in around you like the hands of a giant, leaving only a thin strip of blue sky visible high above.
The air inside here is different. It smells of wet moss and ancient stone, with a damp coolness that instantly makes you forget the scorching sun outside. The noise of the water becomes deafening: the Raganello bounces between the boulders with a force that makes the ground tremble underfoot.
There is no way around it: to explore the gorges, you must enter the torrent. The water is so cold it takes your breath away, but it's the only way to advance through these rock corridors. The slippery boulders require caution with every step, while small waterfalls spray you with icy droplets that sparkle in the filtered sunlight.
The "giants' kettles" are circular holes carved into the rock by the water, natural pools where the emerald green water invites a plunge that only the bravest dare to take. The contrast between the warmth of the sun-heated stone and the liquid ice of the torrent creates unforgettable sensations.
Between the walls, giant ferns grow that look like they're straight out of the Jurassic period, while small crabs scuttle quickly as you pass. In the calmer pools, metallic dragonflies dance on the water's surface like modern fairies.
When the canyon widens, the silence suddenly becomes profound. Only the gentle gurgle of the water flowing slowly and, if you're lucky, the whistle of the eagle flying high between the rocky ridges.
The gorges must only be tackled with expert guides and specific equipment: wetsuit, helmet, and anti-slip shoes are mandatory. The full route requires 4–6 hours of walking in the water, but shorter excursions are available for families. The best season is from May to September, when the water is less torrential but still icy. Book in advance because groups are limited to protect this natural jewel that will leave you speechless and desperately wanting to return.
