Le Fonti del Clitunno: sacred waters amidst Umbrian poetry, myths, and nature

Autore: Redazione 30/08/2025 17:39

Le Fonti del Clitunno (The Clitunno Springs), in the heart of Umbria, is a place that seems suspended between myth and reality, where water flows from crystalline sources to form an enchanted small lake.

This location has been considered sacred since antiquity. In fact, the ancient Romans venerated the god Clitumnus, spirit of the waters, and today, walking along the paths bordering the small lake, you can still perceive that mystical atmosphere.

The water, transparent and cool with an emerald green hue, is the absolute protagonist, creating scenes worthy of an impressionist painting. The springs have fascinated writers and poets. Virgil mentions them in his works, and Giosuè Carducci celebrates them in some unforgettable verses. It's easy to understand why; the place is spectacular.

In addition to the scenic beauty, the Tempietto del Clitunno (Small Temple of Clitumnus), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located here. It is an early Christian building that encompasses centuries of history.

Visiting the Fonti del Clitunno is a sensory journey, where you can rediscover the soul of Umbria as it reveals itself through legends and damp grass.
