In Val d'Arzino, where Friuli shows its wildest and most secret side, water has carved a series of natural pools into the rock that look like they're straight out of a movie. The Arzino Waterfalls (Cascate dell'Arzino) are one of those places that make you understand why it's worth leaving the car and walking: every step in the woods is an investment that pays off handsomely when you reach the emerald-colored pools.
The trail starts gently among beech and chestnut trees that, in summer, create a green tunnel where the temperature suddenly drops compared to the road. You immediately smell the scent of the undergrowth: that mix of damp leaves, moss, and cool air that only true forests possess. The sound of the water begins softly, then grows increasingly louder until it transforms into a soundtrack that accompanies the entire route.
The first waterfall is always a surprise, even if you know it's there. The water plunges from a limestone rock face, creating a perfectly round pool where the water is so transparent that you can see the stones at the bottom even at three meters deep. The emerald green color is incredible: it almost looks artificial, but it's all thanks to the minerals dissolved in the rock.
The first dive is a shock. The water is freezing even in the middle of summer—that kind of cold that takes your breath away and makes you scream, but then you don't want to get out. The pools are deep enough to swim in and small enough to feel embraced by nature. Floating in these natural pools surrounded by rock walls and lush vegetation is an experience that relaxes both muscles and mind.
Each waterfall is different. There are at least four main ones along the course of the stream: some have spectacular drops that create water features perfect for photos, while others form tranquil small lakes ideal for those seeking absolute peace. The smooth boulders around the pools are perfect for stretching out in the sun after a dip.
For photographers, this place is a gold mine: the plays of light on the falling water, the green reflections of the pools, and the contrasts between the white of the water and the green of the vegetation offer unique shots practically every meter.
The waterfalls are reached from Vito d'Asio, following the signs for Val d'Arzino. The trail requires about 30–40 minutes of walking on ground that is sometimes wet and slippery: shoes with good grip are mandatory. Bring your swimsuit, towel, and a strong desire to dive into waters that seem stolen from paradise.
