The Bucamante Waterfalls: where lost love meets wild nature

Autore: Redazione 21/09/2025 14:03

Half an hour from Modena, hidden in the Sassi di Roccamalatina Park, there's a place where a tragic love story gave its name to one of Emilia's most beautiful waterfalls. The Bucamante is more than just water cascading down rocks: it's a legend that blends with the scent of the forest and the cool sound of the stream that runs through this little-known yet incredibly fascinating valley.

The trail starts from the car park, and you are immediately immersed in a dense wood of chestnut and beech trees that, in summer, create an almost impenetrable green dome. Sunlight struggles to filter through the leaves, creating patches of light that dance on the dirt path. You immediately feel the coolness of the undergrowth: that natural temperature that makes you forget the summer heat after just the first hundred meters of walking.

The wooden bridges that cross the stream are a small delight during the walk. They creak slightly underfoot and offer glimpses of the water flowing fast over the smooth stones. The sound of the water accompanies the entire route, growing louder as you approach the main waterfall.

The legend tells of an impossible love between two local young people: he was poor, she was from a wealthy family. When her parents forbade the marriage, the boy, in despair, threw himself from the waterfall. Hence the name "Bucamante," literally "lover's hole." Romantic and tragic at the same time, but who knows if that's truly how it happened. What's certain is that the place genuinely has something magical about it.

Arriving at the waterfalls is a lovely surprise. The water plunges from a rock face, creating a natural pool surrounded by moss-covered boulders. The water temperature is icy even in the middle of summer, but there's always some brave soul who dives in, shouting from the cold. The refreshing effect is felt even just sitting on the rocks, listening to the hypnotic sound of the falling water.

The trail isn't difficult but requires shoes with good grip: some sections are damp and can be slippery, especially after rain. Children and grandparents can manage it without problems; just take it slow and enjoy the forest. The walk takes about 45 minutes uphill, a little less on the way back.

During the summer, this spot is perfect for escaping the heatwave of the Po Valley. The temperature in the woods can be up to 10 degrees lower than in the city, and the humidity from the stream makes everything cooler and easier to breathe.

From the center of Guiglia, follow the signs for the Sassi di Roccamalatina Park. Parking is free but limited, so it's best to arrive early in the morning on weekends. Bring water, a snack, and especially your camera: the plays of light in the woods and the waterfalls plunging into the green pools provide shots that would make professionals envious. A perfect place for a day trip that combines nature, legend, and the peace that only the woods can offer.
