Altopiano di Colfiorito: where Umbria guards its lost lake

Autore: Redazione 28/09/2025 11:10

At nearly a thousand meters of altitude, the Altopiano di Colfiorito (Colfiorito Plateau) unfolds like a natural amphitheater where time seems to have stopped. Here, among gentle hills that caress the sky, one of the rarest treasures of the Apennines is hidden: the Palude di Colfiorito (Colfiorito Marsh), the last whisper of an ancient lake that once embraced the entire plain.

The fresh mountain wind carries the melodious song of the warblers and the delicate rustling of the rushes that sway like green waves. This karst miracle tells a millenary story, where water has shaped the calcareous rock, creating mysterious sinkholes and secret swallow holes that disappear into the earth's belly.

The Colfiorito Marsh is a unique botanical jewel, where wild orchids with purple hues sprout among the damp grass and carnivorous plants patiently await their prey. The intense scent of water mint mixes with the pure mountain air, while iridescent dragonflies dance above crystalline water mirrors that reflect white, cotton-like clouds.

During the spring migrations, this sanctuary transforms into a crossroads of life: elegant Black Storks perch among the reeds, while Marsh Harriers glide silently over stretches of golden cattails. The educational trails snake through this natural cathedral, offering breathtaking glimpses where every step reveals new wonders.

The Environmental Education Center shares the secrets of this fragile ecosystem, where endemic species have found refuge for millennia. The panoramic observatories allow you to embrace the entire basin with your gaze, where emerald pastures alternate with wetlands shimmering like mirrors broken by the wind.

How to Get There

  • From Foligno: Take the SS77 della Val di Chienti towards Colfiorito, following the signs for about 25km through panoramic curves that open onto the plateau.
  • From Perugia: Take the SS318 to Nocera Umbra, then continue on the SS77.
  • Parking/Access: Free parking is located at the Colfiorito Visitor Center (open on weekends from March to November). The Nature Reserve is accessible year-round with free entry, but it is advisable to wear waterproof shoes to explore the marshy trails.
