Venice Lagoon: a world suspended between water, sky, and history

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:49

It is one of the most visited places in the world, yet it is so complex to describe. A unique ecosystem, where nature and civilization merge. We are talking about the Venice Lagoon, one of the most fascinating areas in Veneto and the entire world. It extends for about 550 km² and hosts not only the famous city of Venice but also an archipelago of over 100 islands, canals, and brackish water expanses.

It is a true labyrinth made of water, which changes constantly and challenges even the most expert. The lagoon holds hidden gems, besides the city of the Doges, such as Burano, with its colorful houses, or Murano, famous worldwide for its glass. Torcello, on the other hand, is the oldest among the inhabited islands, and time there seems to have stopped amidst the Byzantine ruins. The barene are small strips of land that emerge at low tide, and they are important because many migratory birds arrive here, including Black-winged Stilts (cavalieri d'Italia) and flamingos.

Man and environment have coexisted for centuries, even though the heavy tourism challenges this ecosystem. The smaller islands like Sant'Erasmo, considered the vegetable garden of Venice, where many castrature (small artichokes) are grown, or San Francesco del Deserto, inhabited only by friars, or Mazzorbo, once a center of power, now a quiet village. Furthermore, in Venice, you can take a small tour by boat, kayak, vaporetto (water bus), or gondola.

For those who love walking or cycling, the Lido di Venezia and Pellestrina also offer kilometers of routes among dunes and fishing villages. The Venice Lagoon is one of the most studied lagoon environments in Europe, and it is, in fact, a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the historic center of Venice.

Visiting the Lagoon means immersing yourself in a world apart, in a world you have never seen before, suspended between water and land, a fragile yet wonderfully stunning ecosystem.
