Lake Trasimeno, amidst suspended villages, romantic islands, and endless sunsets

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:41

Perugia hosts a lake that looks hand-painted. It is located right in the green heart of Italy, and with its soft shades, it unites nature, history, and villages. We are talking about Lake Trasimeno, which is a shallow lake surrounded by fields of sunflowers, olive groves, and vineyards. It is located in the province of Perugia and, in addition to the lake itself, is home to many inhabited centers that seem like fairy tales.

Castiglione del Lago is the most famous and overlooks the western shore. It has its own medieval castle and also the Palazzo della Corgna, rich in Renaissance frescoes. However, the real magic happens on the water. Trasimeno, in fact, has three islands: Isola Maggiore (Major Island), inhabited by a few people but very famous for its bobbin lace, Isola Minore (Minor Island), which is now private and cannot be visited, and Isola Polvese (Polvese Island), which is the largest, with a scientific-educational park where students often go on field trips. There are many outdoor activities. From trekking to boat trips to birdwatching, all within the nature reserves.

The valley marsh is a true paradise for those who love to photograph the most particular fish. The lake, therefore, is obviously also a destination for gourmet food lovers. In fact, there are many dishes based on freshwater fish, seasoned in a way that creates symphonies for the palate. These dishes are accompanied by Umbrian white wines, famous for their quality.

In the summer, the shores of Lake Trasimeno come alive with events, festivals, and fairs. The sunsets that can be admired looking out over the lake are among the most beautiful in Italy. The lake is therefore a slow and gentle oasis, perfect for those who want to find a rhythm that moves at their own pace.
