Lago Maggiore and the Borromean Islands: jewels suspended between water and history

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:13

There is a lake in Northern Italy that hosts an archipelago within it. We are not talking about a fairy tale, but about the marvelous Lake Maggiore, which is located in the heart of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, between Piedmont and Lombardy. It has enchanted travelers and dreamers for centuries with its blue waters and the mountains that are reflected on its surface and in its reflection.

The three main islands of the aforementioned archipelago are Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori. All three tell different stories, but all are wonderful to hear. Isola Bella is perhaps the most famous. The name already gives us an idea of why it is considered the most evocative. A Baroque palace is reflected in the water and is surrounded by Italian gardens and terraces with statues, fountains, and white peacocks. It was once the home of the ancient noble Borromeo family, but today it is open to the public and to those who want to visit its interiors. Isola Madre, on the other hand, is more intimate and quieter. It also hosts a historic villa, but it takes on an appearance that shields the nature surrounding the villa. It is a corner of the world outside of time, a small paradise accessible to everyone. And then there is Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island), the only one inhabited all year round. This hosts narrow alleys, stone houses, and small restaurants where you can taste typical local dishes. These islands are not isolated. Many of the greatest historical figures have visited these islands: Napoleon, Stendhal, Dickens, and even Queen Victoria.

Lake Maggiore is still one of the most evocative and elegant destinations, sought after by those who want the charm of a mysterious place. You can navigate between the islands with boats departing from Stresa or Baveno, which provides a relaxing and panoramic experience. The lake offers different colors depending on the season. In spring, the pink of the azaleas and their scent will enchant visitors. While in autumn, the gold of the leaves and the deep blue of summer will offer different experiences.

So, if you are looking for a journey into elegance, nature, and absolute peace, Lake Maggiore and the three Borromean Islands are ideal for everyone.
