The Bracciano and Martignano Regional Natural Park opens up in a territory suspended between life and nature, among the volcanic hills north of Rome. It was established in 1999 and today covers over 16,000 hectares, encompassing the municipalities of Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia, Trevignano Romano, and Manziana. The two lakes, from which the park takes its name, occupy a depression of volcanic origin dating back about 600,000 years ago: the lava completely shaped the landscape and makes the park one of the most beautiful observation points for bird lovers.
Lake Bracciano is the largest in Lazio and is not connected to tributaries, while Martignano, which is smaller, remains isolated and is therefore preserved from mass tourism. There are countless species of birds, including the Red-crested Pochard and the Common Pochard, while among the most fascinating beech woods are those of Monte Raschio and Oriolo Romano. You can go rowing on the lakes, and also take boat tours on Bracciano, although internal combustion engines are prohibited.
Getting there is simple: by car from Rome, you travel about 30 km and reach it comfortably by taking the Cassia road. From Rome towards Anguillara and Trevignano, you can also take buses, and from there the trails start directly towards the lakes and the beech woods.
