Lake Tovel: the enchanted mirror that once turned red

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:38

In the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, nestled among the mountains, lies one of the most iconic and evocative places in Trentino, Lake Tovel. It is located at a significant altitude, about 1,178 meters, in Val di Non, and is a body of water surrounded by Dolomite walls. There are many plays of light and color due to the reflections of the walls on the crystalline waters of the lake.

What has made this lake famous is this particular feature: until the 1960s, something mysterious happened in the summer. In fact, the lake has an almost thriller past. Its waters turned red, creating an almost splatter effect. However, the phenomenon was not caused by blood, but by an algae, Tovellia sanguinea. Naturally, the reddening of the lake fueled legends and fantastic tales, so much so that it is still known today as the red lake. The algae is still present, but the environmental conditions no longer allow this phenomenon to occur, which once lent charm and mystery to the lake.

An easy loop trail winds around the lake, which can be easily completed in an hour and a half, even by families and less experienced hikers. During the walk, you also find wooden bridges to cross that offer marvelous panoramic views, in addition to some hidden small beaches. It is a small paradise for those who love relaxation and photography.

The emerald green water is also perfect for a quick dip in the summer, when you want to cool off. The location is isolated, but the lake is easily reachable from Cles, Tuenno, or Malais, and there is a very efficient shuttle system, especially in the summer. Tovel is a place to be felt, not just seen with the eyes, and it invites contemplation of the power of nature in a single body of water.
