Lake Resia: the phantom bell tower emerging from the waters of time

Autore: Redazione 28/09/2025 10:46

In the remote valleys of South Tyrol, where the border between Italy, Austria, and Switzerland dissolves into a blend of cultures and dreamlike landscapes, one of Europe's most haunting and fascinating sights emerges from the turquoise waters: Lake Resia (Reschensee) with its submerged bell tower. This solitary spire, jutting out like an accusing finger from the lake's depths, tells a story of controversial progress and submerged memory, transforming a tragic past event into one of the most recognizable photographic icons of the Alps.

The Silent Witness of a Submerged Village

The approach to this legendary body of water travels through breathtaking scenery. From the A22 Brenner motorway, exiting at Sluderno/Schlanders, the SS40 of the Val Venosta (Vinschgau) snakes for 30km through endless apple orchards and medieval castles perched on rocky spurs, until you reach Curon/Graun. Along the way, the linguistic alternation of the road signs—Italian, German, Ladin—reminds you of the cultural richness of this borderland where alpine traditions blend into a unique identity cocktail.

The first glance at the bell tower causes an emotional shiver that runs down the spine like an electric shock. This 14th-century Gothic tower, the sole surviving witness to the forced submersion in 1950, stands in the crystalline waters with moving dignity. The visual effect is unsettling and poetic: the water lapping the stone base creates swaying reflections that double the image, while the surrounding mountains, the Ortles, Similaun, and Weissugel, frame this aquatic stage with snow-capped peaks nearing $3,000\text{ meters}$.

The Walk and the Legend

Walking the scenic path that encircles the artificial basin ($6\text{ kilometers}$ of flat walking) offers constantly changing views of this involuntary monument. The mountain air smells of freshly cut grass and alpine flowers, while the muffled silence is interrupted only by the gentle lapping of the artificial waves against the gravelly shore and the distant tinkling of cowbells from grazing cattle on the surrounding slopes.

During the early morning hours, when the thin mist rises from the still waters and the bell tower seems to float in a dreamlike dimension, the atmosphere becomes magical and melancholic. Local legends whisper that on stormy nights, you can still hear the phantom tolls of the submerged bells, while fiery sunsets paint this surreal landscape with impossible shades that transform Resia into one of the most photographed and emotionally potent places in the European Alps.

How to Get There

  • Access: From the A22 Brenner motorway, take the Sluderno/Schlanders exit. Follow the SS40 (Val Venosta road) for about $30\text{ km}$ towards Curon/Graun.
  • Trail: The panoramic path around the lake is 6km long and flat.
  • Best Time: Year-round; mornings and sunsets are particularly atmospheric for photography.
