Lake Pilato: the hidden gem of the Sibilline Mountains

Autore: Redazione 25/08/2025 20:45

Within the Sibilline Mountains National Park, a natural jewel is hidden at an altitude of 1,940 meters, nestled among the most prominent peaks in the Marche region. We are talking about Lake Pilato, an unmissable summit destination for lovers of nature and trekking.

Lake Pilato offers a spectacular view, surrounded by imposing peaks, and features clear, crystalline waters that perfectly reflect the mountains. In summer, it is ideal for a refreshing dip from the scorching temperatures, while in winter it becomes glacial.

Its name derives directly from Pontius Pilate. In fact, myth holds that his body was thrown here, and this air of mystery makes the visit not only a natural experience but also a place that tells ancient stories and legends.

Within the park, and specifically within the lake, you can find a unique biodiversity. The lake is home to the Chirocephalus marchesonii (Marchesoni's Fairy Shrimp), a tiny, endemic red crustacean that lives in the clear waters of Lake Pilato. It thrives in a protected and fragile ecosystem, making it a point of interest for biologists and nature enthusiasts.

The hike to reach the lake is of medium difficulty and starts from the town of Foci di Montemonaco, thus only accessible to those with a decent level of physical fitness. However, the trails offer a panorama that will provide great emotions. Lake Pilato is therefore an oasis of peace, far from the chaos of the city and close to the hearts of those seeking a rejuvenating experience in the greenest and most extreme side of nature.
