Lake Campotosto: an artificial lake that will make you fall in love

Autore: Redazione 21/08/2025 15:03

Between the majestic peaks of Gran Sasso and the Laga mountains, in the purest part of Abruzzo, lies a stretch of water whose changing colors and surrounding landscape illuminate the entire landscape. This is Lake Campotosto, located at an altitude of over 1,300 meters. It is the largest artificial reservoir in the region and one of the largest in Italy.

Looking at it from a distance, you would not think that the reservoir is artificial, but natural, given its immense size. The chromatic spectacle it offers is unforgettable. In winter, the lake is a frozen expanse that reflects the snow-capped mountains, while in summer and spring, the water is blue, intense, and blends with the green of the pastures.

Lake Campotosto is far from mass tourism and is therefore perfect as a place for contemplation. However, it is also ideal for those who enjoy long walks, trekking, or cycling accompanied by mountain views. Many choose this place to practice sports such as canoeing or sailing, but its shores are perfect for picnics away from the chaos of the city. Animal lovers will find a treasure trove here, as the lake is home to a wealth of wildlife.

In a setting that conveys peace and harmony, it is easy to spot birds of various species, especially water birds, but also herons, coots, and mallards. The lake takes its name from the village of Campotosto, which completes the experience with its village atmosphere and gastronomic traditions.

The mortadella sausages of Campotosto are famous, having been awarded Slow Food Presidium status, and tell the gastronomic history of the village.

Lake Campotosto is therefore a place here relaxation, contemplation, and sport come together, offering a complete and unforgettable experience. It is an unspoiled corner of Abruzzo, blue and enchanting to anyone who visits it. It is really worth taking a trip there if you are in the area.
