Lake Predil: nature, history, and adventure in the Julian Alps

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:31

The most fascinating gem of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is probably Lake Predil (Lago del Predil), which is located a few kilometers from Tarvisio. It is a large Alpine lake of glacial origin, surrounded by high peaks and majestic landscapes, offering tranquility and wonder in every season. Its location is perfect for those who want to venture between history, nature, and breathtaking views, or for those who want to undertake an international journey, being just a few steps from Slovenia.

There are many activities that can be enjoyed at Lake Predil: canoeing, windsurfing, but also a regenerating swim with a view of the mountains can provide many emotions. Those who prefer, instead, to walk on the paths that line the shore, they are perfect for a relaxing stroll or a picnic. Lake Predil is not just nature, it is also historical memory. In fact, during the First World War, the entire area was part of the Austro-Italian front, and in fact, even today you can visit the Austro-Hungarian fortifications hidden in the woods, up to the Predil Pass, which is located at 1,156 meters of altitude, offering a real dive into history in a breathtaking natural context.

A legend surrounds Lake Predil. In the center of the lake, there is a small island that contributes to making the scenery even more suggestive and almost mythological. The legend says that the island disappeared after a village was submerged by a flood as a divine punishment, and the only survivor was a generous woman who had given shelter to a mother with a child. For this reason, the small island is today considered a symbol of protection in memory.

And if you want a local village experience, it is also easy to find refuges and mountain huts (malghe) nearby where you can taste typical Friulian dishes, such as polenta, frico, mountain cured meats, and cheeses. In winter, the snow covers everything, and the lake transforms into an icy mirror to admire. Lake Predil is perfect because it is far from mass tourism, ideal for those seeking silence and spectacular scenery. A corner of Friuli that surprises and remains intact.
