Lake Orta: a fairytale village and the quiet island of Piedmont

Autore: Redazione 09/05/2026 03:32

Overview of Lake Orta

Lake Orta is a compact, tranquil lake in Piedmont known for intimate landscapes, views of the Mottarone and a small island that appears to float: the Island of San Giulio. It’s an ideal destination for a slow weekend—cobbled lanes, lakeside cafés and peaceful panoramas.

Getting there and getting around

The lake is reachable by car via the A26 motorway with exits for Gravellona Toce, Borgomanero or Arona depending on which shore you aim for. By train, the Domodossola–Novara line stops at Orta-Miasino station; buses and taxis link to the lakeside. Public boats connect towns and the island, enabling exploration without a car.

Orta San Giulio and the Island of San Giulio

Orta San Giulio is the emblematic village: narrow alleyways, Piazza Motta on the waterfront and arcades with cafés and local shops. Short boat rides connect to the Island of San Giulio, where a Benedictine monastery and the basilica stand. A circular path around the island offers continuous lake views and a notably quiet atmosphere.

Santuaries, the Sacred Mountain and viewpoints

The Sacro Monte of Orta, a UNESCO site, is reached along the shaded "Sacra Via": twenty chapels depict episodes from the life of Saint Francis with detailed scenes. The Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso provides a dramatic terrace overlooking the roofs and shifting colors of the water. For light hiking, the Buccione Tower and the Special Nature Reserve offer forest trails and elevated lake views.

Nearby villages, traditions and flavours

Smaller communities such as Pella and San Filiberto show a more everyday face of lakeside life, with local food, simple promenades and fishermen's boats. Stopping in historic cafés or choosing restaurants serving regional produce enhances the bond with the place.

Practical tips for your visit

  • Best time: spring and autumn for light and colours; winter for a quieter, intimate mood.
  • Mobility: use boats to hop between towns and the island and explore on foot.
  • Suggested stay: 1–2 days to see Orta, the island and one or two neighbouring villages; add half a day for the Sacro Monte.
  • What to wear: comfortable shoes for cobbles and steps, sun protection in summer.

Lake Orta suits visitors who appreciate slow travel in Italian villages: small details—a bell, footsteps on pebbles, light on the water—make for a memorable experience blending nature, heritage and regional cuisine.
