Reopening of the Ghetto of Cagliari: findings from the excavations

The monumental complex known as the Ghetto, located on the Santa Croce bastions in the Castello district of Cagliari, has reopened after a significant public-funded renovation. The project, supported by the municipality for around one million euros, combined structural consolidation, system upgrades and archaeological investigations.

Archaeological discoveries on the terrace

Work on the intermediate terrace uncovered previously unknown rooms that provide fresh insights into the site's construction phases: from the 16th-century fortifications to later adaptations as a Piedmontese barracks. The recovered structures enhance the archaeological and historical value of the area and will be subject to further study and interpretation.

Restoration and modernization works

  • Systems upgrade: new electrical, lighting, HVAC and fire detection systems designed for artwork preservation and exhibition safety.
  • Refinements: replacement of the main skylight and fixtures, plus resin flooring to increase light and formal clarity of the interiors.
  • Visitor services: high-performance Wi‑Fi and renovated restrooms to improve user experience.

Cultural programming

The reopening coincides with the start of a calendar of high-profile events. The inaugural exhibition focuses on crimes of the Nazi-fascist period, reflecting the venue’s dual role as a place of historical memory and civic engagement as well as cultural display.

Practical information for visitors

  • Location: The Ghetto, Santa Croce bastions (Castello), Cagliari.
  • Accessibility: Upgrades improved safety and comfort standards, making the site suitable for international-level events and exhibitions.
  • What to see: In addition to restored interiors, visitors can explore the newly exposed terrace rooms discovered during excavation, which enrich the visit.

This regeneration project enhances an important element of Cagliari’s urban heritage by combining archaeological preservation, contemporary usability and active cultural programming.
