Riserva Naturale Sentina (Sentina Nature Reserve): the last wild corner of the Adriatic

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:56

A few steps from the beaches of San Benedetto del Tronto opens up a completely different world, one that is green, authentic, silent, and uncontaminated. This is the Sentina Regional Nature Reserve, a protected coastal area in the Marche region and one of the smallest in Italy. It was established in 2004 and extends for 180 hectares between the sea, sand, and reeds. It is one of the last examples of coastal habitat on the Adriatic coast.

Many migratory birds pass through here before continuing throughout Europe and Africa. For those seeking an experience far from conventional seaside tourism, Sentina is a fabulous place. It is a silent refuge where the sounds of nature will shield you from the noises of the outside world. The beauty lies in the reflections the sea makes with the sky. The presence of the ancient hydraulic gatehouse (casello idraulico), a 19th-century building that once regulated the waters in the marshy area, makes the whole thing more fascinating.

It has been restored and is one of the historical symbols of the reserve. Furthermore, from there you also have a good panoramic view and it is a strategic observation point for birdwatching enthusiasts. The Sentina reserve is also an open-air laboratory, as schools and universities often collaborate with the park for lessons on sustainable agriculture and civic education, especially regarding the environment.

It is useless to expect beach resorts because nature is the absolute protagonist. Sentina is beautiful precisely because it is wild; it still preserves that authenticity that has been lost in the places everyone knows and chases after. Here, time slows down, it truly slows down. Every detail counts.
