The Val di Masino Nature Reserve: forests, erratic boulders, and crystal-clear waters

Just over two hours from Milan, a corner of paradise set within Valtellina reveals itself amidst erratic boulders and crystal-clear waters. This is the Val di Masino Nature Reserve, established in 2009 and the largest in Lombardy. It encompasses the famous Val di Mello, which we have already discussed, and the Bagni di Masino forest, offering an immersive experience in unspoiled nature.

Val di Mello is also nicknamed the "Little Yosemite" and is a triumph of alpine beauty. Here, valley floors reflect the imposing granite walls thanks to the flowing stream waters. This is where the Bidet della Contessa is formed, an emerald alpine lake where the forest foliage dyes the colors red and gold. The Ferro waterfall and traditional mountain huts punctuate the path, while Mount Disgrazia soars to 3,678 meters. The Sasso Remenno, the largest monolith in Europe, is ideal for bouldering enthusiasts—a true natural climbing gym.

The Bagni di Masino forest, on the other hand, seems straight out of a Grimm Brothers fairy tale. With its centuries-old beeches and firs wrapped in moss, it features sensory trails also designed for the visually impaired and invites visitors to discover nature through all their senses. With a 1,100-meter loop trail, a magical atmosphere is created here, perfect for families and photographers seeking breathtaking views.

Easily accessible from San Martino, parking is limited, but many shuttles are available. The Val di Masino is an invitation to slow down, an invitation to admire a unique natural heritage. Whether you go there for a simple climb or a family picnic, this corner of Lombardy will provide unique emotions.
