The Penne Lake Nature Reserve: a paradise for the soul

Autore: Redazione 20/09/2025 10:23

In the Pescara hills, where cultivated fields meet patches of woodland, lies Lake Penne. This artificial basin, created in the sixties, has slowly become a small oasis where nature has regained control, transforming a man-made work into a perfect refuge for those seeking peace and beauty.

Early in the morning, when the water is still smooth as glass, the lake reflects the clouds passing slowly in the sky. The air smells of fresh grass and wild flowers, with that particular fragrance only found near water. It is the best time to enjoy the silence, broken only by the chirping of birds waking up among the reeds.

Waterfowl are the true hosts here. Grey herons stand motionless among the reeds, patiently waiting for fish to pass. Kingfishers are small blue arrows that skim the water at incredible speed, while coots swim peacefully, leaving small wakes behind them. With a little luck, you can also see wild ducks and other migratory birds.

The trails around the lake are easy to navigate and offer constantly changing viewpoints. You walk among willows and poplars, with the lake appearing and disappearing through the vegetation. In spring, everything explodes with color: yellow broom, white water lilies floating on the surface, and reeds swaying green in the wind. Autumn, however, provides golden tones that make every photo perfect.

The Visitor Center organizes guided excursions that are very useful for learning to recognize birds and understanding how this ecosystem works. The guides know all the lake's secrets and know where to find the shyest animals.

The wooden walkway that extends into the water is the ideal place to stop and observe. From here, you have a panoramic view of the lake and can often see the aquatic fauna up close. Sunset from this position is spectacular: the water is tinged with red and gold, as the birds return to their night refuges.

Practical Information

  • How to get there: From Penne, follow the signs for the lake. Free parking is available at the reserve entrance.
  • When to go: All year round, but spring and autumn are perfect for seeing migratory birds. Early mornings are best.
  • What to bring: Binoculars are essential for birdwatching, a camera, and comfortable shoes for walking on dirt trails.
  • Guided Tours: By reservation at the Visitor Center, highly recommended, especially for families.
  • Duration: 2–3 hours to visit everything calmly, more if you love nature photography.

Lake Penne is one of those places that truly relaxes you. Here, time seems to flow slower, and you forget the daily stress. A corner of nature just a stone's throw from the city, perfect for a getaway that recharges your batteries.
