Pietra di Bismantova: the rock ship that sailed in Dante's imagination

Autore: Redazione 30/09/2025 19:41

It emerges from the Reggio Emilia Apennines like an impossible fortress, a perfectly squared limestone mass that defies all geological logic. The Pietra di Bismantova is unlike any other mountain: it is a solitary monolith over 1,000 meters high, with vertical walls that plunge down for a hundred meters of pure overhang. Seen from afar, it looks like a rock spaceship delicately placed among the woods, or perhaps a natural cathedral built by divine hands.

When Dante Alighieri saw it during his Emilian exile, he was so struck that he included it in the Divine Comedy as an image of the mountain of Purgatory. And simply being at its base is enough to understand why: those cream-colored walls rising vertically towards the sky communicate something mystical and sublime, a sense of elevation that transcends the physical.

The ascent to the summit is a secular pilgrimage that rewards every step. The trail climbs through fragrant beech woods and clearings where the air smells of wild thyme. Then, suddenly, you emerge onto the summit plateau: an incredibly flat grassy area, the size of a football field, surrounded by the void. The wind blows incessantly up there, carrying the resinous scent of pines and that particular smell of stone warmed by the sun.

The panorama is boundless: the gaze sweeps from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines to the Po Valley, which shines like a silver sea on clear days. On the vertical walls, experienced climbers perform acrobatic choreographies: the Bismantova is indeed a legendary climbing gym, with over 100 routes traced on the compact rock.

But you don't need to be a mountaineer to fall in love with this solitary giant. It is enough to sit on the grass of the plateau, feel the wind whisper millenary stories, and watch the clouds caress the rock like waves on a reef.

How to Get There

  • Access: From Reggio Emilia, take the SP63 towards Castelnovo ne' Monti (about 40 km). Follow signs for Pietra di Bismantova and park near the Rifugio Bismantova.
  • Trail: From here, the CAI 697 trail starts, which leads to the summit in about 45 minutes (350-meter elevation gain, medium difficulty).
