The Realmonte Salt Cave (Grotta di Sale di Realmonte), located on the southwest coast of Sicily, is a geological marvel that is over six million years old and has attracted visitors from all over the world. This underground salt cave was created by nature itself through marine erosion, wind, and volcanic activity.
The Composition of the Cave The cave is predominantly formed by rock salt (salgemma), also known as sodium chloride or common salt, which settles when the salty water in which it is dissolved evaporates or the system's kinetic energy is removed. Specifically, when saltwater evaporates, the water turns into vapor, but the salt remains solid. If the salt concentration in the water is high enough, the salt begins to crystallize, forming small salt crystals that can join and grow over time, forming large rock salt crystals.
Location The Salt Cave is located about one kilometer from the coast, near the town of Realmonte. This incredible cavity extends for over 50 meters below sea level and is famous for its unique shapes and colors. The walls and ceiling of the cave are completely covered with salt crystals of various shapes and sizes, which makes the view even more spectacular.
Discovery The Salt Cave was discovered only recently, in 1961, when a group of miners trying to excavate a salt mine for trade discovered this incredible structure. Initially, the cave was very small, but over the years, the erosion caused by water and wind created its current shape.
The Salt Cathedral A church, called the "Cattedrale di Sale" (Salt Cathedral), has been carved inside, and the sculptures found within are the work of local artist Lillo Alba, who sculpted the rock and salt to create statues and furnishings. In particular, the following works are found: the altar table (mensa), carved on a large block of salt, depicting the lamb, placed on a four-step elevated presbytery; the ambo (lectern), the structure from which readings are proclaimed, also carved on a block of salt, where a cross and the Paschal candle are visible; the bishop's chair (cattedra vescovile), a sort of throne carved into the wall, surmounted by the episcopal emblem.
Behind the altar table, the apse has been carved out, on the closing wall of which the figure of Saint Barbara is sculpted in bas-relief; on the right wall, we find the bas-relief depicting the "Holy Family," while on the left wall, the bas-relief of the "Crucified Jesus." The church entrance is framed by two holy water fonts equipped with a podium, both carved from blocks of salt. The altar of the Salt Cathedral is a place of great charm, where the candlelight reflects on the rock salt walls, creating a mystical and silent atmosphere. The location is a destination for pilgrimages and religious tourism, and represents a unique example of sacred art and industrial archaeology. Every year, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Barbara (December 4th), the bishop pro tempore celebrates mass, attended by all the authorities of the Province.
Other Curiosities The interior of the Salt Cathedral is incredibly evocative and silent, with an almost magical atmosphere. Here, visitors can admire the spectacular shapes and different color nuances of the salt crystals. Furthermore, the acoustics inside the Salt Cathedral are exceptional, and many musicians and artists have chosen this location as a setting for unique and unforgettable performances. The cave is also known for its therapeutic properties which are thought to be due to the presence of negative ions, known to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Consequently, it has become a popular destination for those seeking natural remedies for respiratory and skin ailments, as well as for those who wish to experience the calm and relaxing atmosphere of the cave. The Salt Cave is yet another jewel of the city of Realmonte, famous above all for one of the most visited destinations in Sicily, the sheer white marl cliff known as the Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks), a site nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cave is one of the locations of the Italkali company, where it produces about 1 million tons of salt per year, and since the mine is always active, guided tours are managed by prior reservation and for a number not exceeding 30 people, adequately secured with miner's helmets and torches. To access the site, visitors are accompanied by an appropriate vehicle.
Why Visit It If you are near Realmonte, visiting the Cave will certainly be an unforgettable experience, a wonder of nature carved into the bowels of the earth, through tunnels about 25 kilometers long that evoke lunar landscapes. Furthermore, the guided visit offers the opportunity to learn more details about the formation of the cave, the geology of the area, and the history of the place.
