On the proposal of the Ministry of Culture, Italy’s National Commission for UNESCO has started procedures to nominate three elements to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage: the nativity scene (presepe), the drying of Valpolicella grapes, and Alpine food heritage.
The proposals aim to protect skills, crafts and rituals that foster social cohesion and local identity. Recognition by UNESCO can boost international visibility, support traditional artisans, encourage conservation policies and stimulate forms of sustainable cultural tourism.
Each nomination will follow UNESCO procedures: dossiers are prepared, technical evaluations and international assessments take place. Some candidatures aim for the Representative List, while others seek entry in the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. The review process will continue in the following months.
Those wishing to explore these traditions can look for local events, museums and associations offering workshops, tastings and guided routes. Historical sites linked to the nativity tradition and towns in the Valpolicella area host thematic tours; Alpine valleys regularly organize markets and festivals that keep regional food practices alive.
