Isola di Bergeggi and Marine Protected Area: the submerged treasure of the Riviera di Ponente

Autore: Redazione 24/09/2025 20:58

Just looking at it from the beach isn't enough: the Isola di Bergeggi (Bergeggi Island) wants to be conquered from the water. This cone-shaped rock jutting out of the crystalline sea of the Riviera di Ponente hides its most beautiful treasures underwater. Seabeds full of life, secret sea caves, and waters so transparent they look like a giant natural pool: here, the Ligurian sea shows its wildest and most pristine side.

Paddling a kayak towards the island is already an adventure. From the small port of Bergeggi, a gentle fifteen-minute paddle is enough to reach this small rocky paradise. During the navigation, the seabed beneath the kayak's keel changes continuously: golden sand near the coast, then granite boulders covered in red algae that create underwater gardens of incredible beauty.

The Grotta della Marina (Marina Cave) is the highlight of the experience. This underwater cavity opens in the southern part of the island, and you can enter it directly with a kayak when the sea is calm. Inside, the electric blue light filtering from the submerged entrance creates magical effects on the rocky walls, while small silver fish swim curiously around the paddles.

For divers, this place is pure addiction. The seabeds of the Marine Protected Area host red gorgonians, colorful spirographs, and a variety of fish that are difficult to find elsewhere on the Ligurian coast. Sargo, sea bream, moray eels, and if you are very lucky, even some groupers hiding among the rocky crevices. Underwater visibility often exceeds 20 meters, offering picture-perfect dives.

The island itself cannot be freely visited to protect its fragile nature, but circumnavigating it slowly allows you to discover hidden coves, stacks sculpted by the waves, and the ruins of the Saracen tower that once watched over this stretch of coast. Every angle offers different photographic scenarios: now sheer cliffs, now pebble beaches accessible only from the sea.

Local operators organize guided excursions perfect for those without experience. Expert marine guides accompany small groups to discover the island's secrets, telling stories of pirates and maritime legends that make everything even more fascinating.

The best period is from May to October, when the sea is warmer and calmer. Summer offers crystalline waters perfect for snorkeling, while spring and autumn offer greater tranquility and better rates.

From the town of Bergeggi, it's easy to descend to the small port where kayaks and boats for the island depart. Parking is available but limited during high season. Bring a mask and fins, water-resistant sunscreen, and lots of curiosity: this corner of marine paradise will make you fall in love with the Ligurian sea like never before.
