Just a few minutes from the center of Santa Margherita Ligure, on the hills of Nozarego, begins an itinerary that enchants both trekking enthusiasts and families with children: the Animal Trail. This circular path, about 3.3 kilometers long, is made special by 14 wooden sculptures depicting animals hidden among trees, clearings, and panoramic corners — a kind of treasure hunt that turns a simple walk into a real adventure.
From the Sanctuary to the Gulf
The route starts from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nozarego, at an altitude of 152 meters. There is free parking nearby, and from the churchyard, taking the path on the left, you immediately enter a chestnut wood. A slightly steeper ascent leads to the first statues, which can be spotted among the branches and leaves. After about half an hour, the view opens up to reveal a breathtaking panorama over the Gulf of Tigullio. Here, at Pini Spessi, you reach the highest point of the trail at 360 meters, before descending gently toward the Chapel of Le Gave.
Among woods, olive trees, and Mediterranean scents
The path alternates shaded sections with sunlit stretches between olive and fig trees. Along the way, benches invite visitors to stop, listen to the forest’s sounds, and breathe in the scents of the Mediterranean scrub. A little further on, the trail rejoins the paved road, just a short distance from the starting point.
Perfect for families (with some care)
The Animal Trail is also suitable for family hikes, especially for children who already have a bit of hiking experience. To tackle it comfortably, it’s best suited for kids aged six and up, as there are some climbs and slightly exposed stretches. Hiking boots and plenty of water are recommended — there are no fountains along the route, and the terrain can become muddy after rain.
An experience combining play and discovery
Beyond offering scenic views and fresh air, the trail sparks children’s curiosity: searching for the animal statues becomes a game that makes them forget the effort of the climb. The path is connected to other trails of the Portofino Park, allowing hikers to extend their excursion and discover new corners of this stunning riviera. A short hike — but one with all the charm of a great outdoor adventure.
