There are two giants of stone that dominate the Apennines between Romagna and the Marche, emerging from the green of the woods like ancient natural fortresses. Sasso Simone and Simoncello are much more than simple mountains: they are geological symbols that recount millions of years of history and offer some of the most spectacular hikes in the entire central Apennines.
Seeing them from afar already makes it clear why they have become legendary. Their vertical sandstone walls rise abruptly from the gentle surrounding slopes, creating a breathtaking contrast. Sasso Simone reaches 1,204 meters, while Simoncello stands at 1,221: two natural towers that have served as a reference point for travelers and shepherds throughout centuries of history.
Climbing to the summit is an experience that changes your perspective on everything. The trails are well-marked but require a minimum of training: the steepness in the final sections can be challenging, especially when you reach the final rock faces. But the effort is rewarded with incredible views: on clear days, you can see the Adriatic Sea, the peaks of the Apennines, and even the skyscrapers of Rimini shining in the distance.
History is at home here. On Sasso Simone, there are the ruins of Città del Sasso, a fortress commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in the 16th century that was intended to be a state-of-the-art fortified city. The project failed, but walking among the ruins of the walls and imagining what this citadel perched on the rock must have been like sends shivers down your spine.
The park is a paradise for hikers of all levels. There are easy trails that circle the base of the sassi, perfect for families with children, and challenging routes that lead up to the highest peaks. During hikes, it's easy to spot buzzards gliding between the rocks and hear the whistle of marmots warning each other of danger.
The "wow" effect is guaranteed, especially at sunset, when the low-lying light transforms the sandstone walls into sheets of red gold. This is the moment when you understand why these places have inspired legends and why they continue to attract hikers from all over Italy.
The park has several access points from both the Romagna and Marche sides. Carpegna and Pennabilli are the most convenient bases for organizing excursions. The visitor centers provide detailed maps and information on the best routes depending on the season. Always bring layered clothing: the weather in the mountains can change quickly, and the temperature difference between the valley floor and the peaks can be significant.
