Civic Museum of Foggia: a journey through the history of Capitanata

Autore: Redazione 10/09/2025 14:17

The Civic Museum of Foggia is the city’s main cultural institution and one of the most important in the entire province. It tells the millennia-old history of the Capitanata region, from prehistory to the modern age. After a turbulent past — much of its collection was destroyed during the bombings of 1943 — the museum now resides in the prestigious Palazzo Arpi, a historic building located in the heart of Foggia’s old town.

Collections: art, history, and archaeology

The museum’s exhibition is divided into several sections, each dedicated to a different aspect of the area’s cultural and historical heritage.

Archaeological Section

This section offers a fascinating look into the ancient Daunian civilization, one of the Italic peoples who inhabited present-day Capitanata. The collection includes artifacts ranging from the Neolithic period to the Roman era, such as:

  • Daunian vases and pottery: decorated with geometric and figurative motifs that showcase the remarkable artistic level reached by this ancient culture.
  • Everyday objects and funerary goods: offering insight into daily life and ritual practices of the time.

Historical Section

This section retraces the history of Foggia through artifacts, documents, and relics covering the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. Highlights include items from the Swabian, Angevin, and Bourbon periods, when the city became a major agricultural hub. Special attention is also given to World War II and the post-war reconstruction, which deeply shaped the identity of modern Foggia.

Art Gallery

The museum’s art gallery features a rich collection of paintings from the 15th to the 20th century. The works, created by both local and national artists, illustrate the stylistic evolution and thematic variety of southern Italian art over the centuries.
