MUSAM in Vigna di Valle adds historic IMAM Ro.41 biplane to permanent

MUSAM welcomes the historic IMAM Ro.41 biplane into its permanent collection

The Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare (MUSAM) in Vigna di Valle has officially added the IMAM Ro.41 trainer biplane to its permanent collection. The aircraft, the result of a restoration project lasting roughly thirty years, was unveiled during a ceremony held on 16 April 2026 in Hangar Badoni.

The presentation featured institutional speeches, historical reenactments and film screenings organized by the CSSAM of Vigna di Valle. A historical-scientific forum on aviation training—past, present and future—brought together speakers from the military, academic and conservation sectors.

Restoration and partners

The restoration was carried out through a partnership between the MUSAM Maintenance and Restoration Section and volunteers from the Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici (GAVS). To compensate for missing original drawings and to recreate parts, the project relied on technical contributions from the Politecnico di Napoli, private collections and specialist staff.

• Aircraft: IMAM Ro.41, designed by Giuseppe Galasso for Industrie Aeronautiche Romeo, used mainly as a trainer.
• Production: prototype flew in 1934; 743 units built between 1935 and 1949.
• Restoration: about 30 years; combination of original parts, archival components and newly reconstructed elements.
