Alfred Eisenstaedt: "Photography Was in the Air" — two venues from May 16

Start: May 16, 2026

From May 16 a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Alfred Eisenstaedt debuts in Italy. Curated by Monica Poggi and produced by CAMERA, the project is presented in two complementary shows at the Museo Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme (Padua) and the Museo Storico Navale in Venice.

The exhibition revisits Eisenstaedt's contribution to photojournalism and the visual culture of the twentieth century, showcasing his versatility from European interwar reportage to his long collaboration with Life, including numerous iconic covers and assignments.

What to expect

  • Iconic images: photographs that capture key historical moments and cultural figures.
  • Portraits: candid and immediate portrayals of politicians, scientists and entertainers.
  • International reportage: work from Europe, the United States, Ethiopia and Japan revealing a wide documentary range.
  • Two-site format: the exhibition's placement in two institutions provides varied contexts and viewing experiences.

The venues

The Museo Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme hosts the part of the show that engages with the civic collection and the historic rooms of the Venetian villa, offering visitors the chance to combine the photography exhibition with a visit to the permanent holdings.

The Museo Storico Navale in Venice, located near the Arsenale, displays the section that explores photography's relationship with historical narrative and collective memory within expansive exhibition spaces.
