In the heart of western Friuli, nestled among hills that look like they were drawn with a ruler, Lake Cornino hides a sight few expect: dozens of griffon vultures soaring majestically over the turquoise waters, creating a perfect blend of natural beauty and wildlife wonder. This small, artificial body of water has become much more than just a basin over time: it is an open-air theater where nature provides unforgettable daily shows.
Looking up at the sky here is a must because huge birds of prey with wingspans exceeding two and a half meters fly overhead. The griffon vultures of the Reserve are one of the most important colonies in Europe, and watching them glide through the air almost without ever flapping their wings is a breathtaking spectacle. When they soar low over the lake, the shadow of their wings slides across the water like that of small, silent airplanes.
The lake itself has a particular charm: its turquoise waters change shade throughout the day, reflecting now the blue of the sky, now the green of the surrounding hills. It's not very deep, but deep enough to host fish that also attract herons and cormorants, which share the airspace with the more imposing griffons. The tranquility of the environment contrasts with the excitement of knowing that creatures that seem to have emerged from prehistory are flying overhead.
The paths around the lake are easy and suitable for everyone, perfect for a post-meal stroll or a morning run with a privileged view of the raptors' flights. There are strategic observation points to stop with binoculars, but often you don't even need them: the griffons fly so low that you can see them perfectly well with the naked eye. The visitor center provides information on the biology of these magnificent birds and the conservation projects.
The silence here has a special quality: broken only by the rustle of the griffons' wings passing overhead and the light lapping of the water on the shore. It's a perfect place for those seeking peace but unwilling to give up the thrill of unique experiences. Children and adults alike are always left speechless when they first see these giants of the air circling in the Friulian sky.
Nature photography finds fertile ground here: capturing a griffon in flight against the backdrop of the lake is a challenge that attracts photographers from all over Italy. The sunset lights transform every shot into a natural work of art.
The lake is located near Forgaria nel Friuli, easily reachable from Udine in half an hour by car. Access is free, and the paths are open all year round. Bring binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens: close encounters with wildlife are virtually guaranteed here every day of the year.
