The Tarot Garden – an artistic dream among the hills of the Tuscan Maremma

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 14:26

Amid the rolling hills of the Tuscan Maremma, in the municipality of Capalbio, lies one of Italy’s most fascinating and mysterious places: The Tarot Garden, still inexplicably little known.

Created by the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, this extraordinary fantasy-art park offers an immersive journey through contemporary art, esotericism, and visionary architecture.

Inaugurated in 1998, the Garden hosts 22 monumental sculptures inspired by the Major Arcana of the Tarot, crafted from ceramics, glass, mirrors, and reinforced concrete. The artworks, some rising over 15 meters high, blend harmoniously with the landscape, transforming the visit into a truly sensory and symbolic experience.

A true open-air museum

To ensure the preservation of the artworks, entry is limited and allowed only through online ticket purchase.

The Garden is open from April 1 to October 15, every day from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with last admission at 6:15 p.m.. The average visit lasts about an hour and a half, but every corner and sculpture invites time for observation, photography, and contemplation.

Tickets are valid only for the selected date and time slot, and are non-changeable and non-refundable, even in cases of bad weather or health issues. Admission is permitted even in the rain and on holidays. There are no guided tours or private visits, but visitors can freely explore the path at their own pace.

Ticket prices

The Tarot Garden applies different admission rates:

  • Full ticket: €15
  • Reduced: €10 (ages 7–22, over 65, Capalbio residents, groups of at least 25 people, licensed tour guides)
  • School groups: €8 per student (for primary and secondary schools, groups of at least 10 students)
  • Free admission: children under 6, visitors with disabilities over 67%, their companions, and one adult for every 10 students
Visitors must present valid documents to confirm eligibility for reduced or free admission.

How to get there and available services

Parking is free but unattended. Dogs are allowed, provided they are kept on a leash. The park is easily accessible from Capalbio or the Tyrrhenian coast via the SS1 Aurelia road.

The Tarot Garden is not just a visit — it is a unique artistic and spiritual experience in Italy: a dreamlike journey made of symbols, colors, and silence, where art becomes architecture and thought merges with imagination.
