The Astroni Crater: a sleeping volcano in the heart of Naples

Autore: Redazione 21/09/2025 09:55

Just a few kilometers from the chaotic traffic of Naples, hidden among buildings and busy roads, lies one of the most fascinating geological secrets of Campania: the Astroni Crater (Cratere degli Astroni). This extinct volcano, dormant for over 4,000 years, is now a natural oasis that makes you forget you are in one of the most densely populated areas of Italy.

The descent into the crater immediately provides a unique sensation. As you walk down the paths that wind into the volcanic caldera, the air changes in temperature and humidity, subtly reminding you that you are walking inside what was once an infernal mouth where incandescent magma violently erupted. Today, its place is taken by lush forests of holm oaks, chestnuts, and oaks that have colonized the crater floor, creating a unique ecosystem where the silence is broken only by the chirping of birds.

The three small lakes that dot the caldera floor are fed by underground springs bubbling up from the volcanic depths. The water has a striking deep green color, due to the dissolved minerals that still rise from the earth's belly. Despite their tranquil appearance, these bodies of water remind us that an active hydrothermal network, connected to the Campi Flegrei volcanic system, still flows beneath our feet.

Wildlife has found refuge in this urban eden: foxes roam among the bushes, stone martens hide in the rocky crevices, while approximately 130 species of birds have made the crater their home. Among these, herons and mallards populate the lakes, along with freshwater turtles basking on floating logs.

But walking along the trails, you occasionally encounter a block of tuff or pumice stone that recalls the volcanic nature of the place. Experts continue to constantly monitor the seismic activity of the area, as the Astroni is part of the Phlegraean volcanic system, which is still considered active, albeit in a quiescent phase.

The Nature Reserve, managed by the WWF, has transformed this crater into a perfect example of how nature can reclaim spaces once devastated by destructive forces. The visitor centers organize guided excursions that recount both the geological history and the biological rebirth of this extraordinary place.

The crater can only be visited by reservation and with authorized guides, both to protect the ecosystem and ensure visitor safety. Opening hours vary according to the season, and access may be temporarily limited during periods of more intense seismic activity in the Phlegraean area. It is beautiful to see the crater from the curved roads of Naples, with sporadic fumaroles in the distance. Bring comfortable shoes for wet terrain and a camera to capture this corner of nature that holds a sense of mystery and rebirth, yet preserves in the silence of its lakes the memory of a fiery past that could, theoretically, awaken.
