The Forest of Wonders Enchants Roccaraso

The Importance of the Forest: Regulating the Ecosystem and Creating Harmony

The forest is an extremely important place for our planet: it provides oxygen and absorbs CO₂; forest soils act as powerful water filters and can even prevent the pollution of surface waters. Moreover, forests are extraordinary regulators of the climate and help mitigate drought.

Alongside their naturalistic, scientific, landscape, and ecological value, forests also possess cultural, artistic, and above all therapeutic significance. We often fail to realize what a forest can offer and how all these “gifts,” if properly integrated and respected, can enhance an entire territory while also providing peace and balance to its visitors.

The Therapeutic Value of the Forest

It is impossible not to mention so-called forest therapy, a practice increasingly used by psychologists and psychotherapists to improve the lives of patients suffering from depression and existential distress. Walking in forests and woodlands greatly enhances emotional and social well-being and, above all, helps prevent and combat psycho-physical stress.

So, are you ready for a journey into the forest?

In Italy, forests cover about 30% of the national territory, and there is a growing demand for eco-sustainable theme parks designed to bring both adults and children closer to forests and nature.

The Forest of Wonders in Roccaraso

In Abruzzo, for example, The Forest of Wonders will soon open—an “furnished” woodland space in the forest area of Roccaraso, where a true gnome village has been recreated. The village features small houses with miniature desks and beds, and thanks to dedicated signage, visitors will be able to learn about the characteristics of forests, their secrets, and their resources.

The park will be inaugurated on September 9 in the Aremogna–Pallottieri area of Roccaraso. It is a nature-immersed theme park designed for both children and adults. The project, developed by GAL Abruzzo Italico–Alto Sangro, includes not only a themed village but also an educational workshop area and a stage for outdoor theater.

A true wonder unfolds along a route extending all the way to Baita Paradiso, passing through a gnome village with miniature houses and informative panels that combine recreational activities with the project’s educational mission—offering insights into forests, nature, and the importance of environmental protection.

We wanted to create a space available to everyone, where companies, associations, and schools can organize shows, events, and educational workshops. An infrastructure that supports the entire area and makes it even more fairy-tale-like,

explains GAL president Rino Talucci in an interview.

Five small houses, eight two-dimensional facades, and interactive games—strictly sustainable—are spread along an 800-meter path that climbs from Aremogna–Pallottieri up to Baita Paradiso. To inaugurate this place of imagination and nature, GAL Aias has organized a weekend of activities for Saturday, September 9, and Sunday, September 10, featuring animation, theatrical performances, and workshops.

The Forest of Wonders will officially come to life on Saturday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m. with a welcoming ceremony. In addition to the opening of the village, there will be a grand parade of the “Little Folk,” made up of elves, sprites, gnomes, dwarves, fairies, and trolls—ready to launch the project dedicated to enhancing the forests of Abruzzo.

Later on Saturday, creative workshops, the Little Folk’s games, the Elven Dance performance, and in the afternoon the roaming show The Forest of Wonders will take place. In the evening, by lantern light, visitors will be able to attend the show The Casket of Dreams (ticketed event).

On Sunday, September 10, the program will be repeated, with a new evening roaming performance (also ticketed) entitled The Breath of the Unicorn.
