The green secrets of the Agro Romano: the Insugherata Nature Reserve

Autore: Redazione 23/08/2025 10:58

Walking through northern Rome, you won't just find elegant neighborhoods, busy streets, and smog. There is, in fact, an unexpected world that few know about and that no one would expect to find in a city like Rome. We are talking about the Insugherata Nature Reserve, a green lung that stands in contrast to the urban streets and modern buildings.

Its landscapes and species seem to belong to another era and represent a treasure trove of nature's best-kept secrets in the Agro Romano. It is located a short distance from the capital and has witnessed centuries of history pass by. The reserve stretches over 700 km from Via Cassia to Via Trionfale and is a mosaic of woods, clearings, and valleys.

The name Insugherata refers to the rare ecosystem found within it, the cork oak forests, which have survived for centuries and mingle with centuries-old oaks and the Mediterranean scrub that has always characterized Italy. Nature has managed to carve out its own space here and has been perfectly preserved on the outskirts of the city, finding refuge right here.

The biodiversity is extremely rich, and you can immediately sense this as you walk along the paths. This landscape was already inhabited 2000 years ago, as evidenced by the traces of the past that are scattered everywhere, such as the remains of Roman villas, ancient aqueducts, and paths that follow itineraries that were already in use many centuries ago.

Insugherata is a veritable natural garden, which seems designed to enchant anyone who visits it. Visiting Insugherata means treating yourself to a surprising experience, far from traffic and far from everything you would expect from Rome.

If you want to relax in an area where you didn't expect to be able to do so, then the park, the Insugherata Nature Reserve, is the ideal green lung for anyone who has enjoyed a short but intense trek, for those who love to visit the green secrets of the Agro Romano. It is an invitation to rediscover the city, starting from its heart and discovering something that you certainly didn't know before.
