Etruscan bronzes from Cortona on display in Milan

From 1 April to 4 October, the Fondazione Luigi Rovati hosts a curated selection of the Corazzi bronzes originating from Cortona. The exhibition combines archaeological insight with the history of collecting to tell the story of this important ensemble.

What the exhibition explores

The display reconstructs the collection's journey: objects discovered in the Valdichiana in the 18th century, assembled in a private collection, and later moved abroad in the 19th century. The exhibition highlights both the archaeological significance of the bronzes and their reception in European antiquarian studies.

Highlights

  • Boy with goose (mid-2nd century BC): a votive bronze of a child wearing a bulla, indicating a dedicatory function.
  • Laran (540–520 BC): a small bronze of the Etruscan war god, bearing a dedicatory inscription.
  • Griffin (mid-4th century BC): a mythological figure dedicated to Tinia, the Etruscan sky god, with eagle head and wings and a leonine body.
  • Historic 18th–19th century volumes documenting early studies and descriptions of the collection, shown to contextualize scholarly interest.

Why visit

The exhibition is an opportunity to see representative examples of Etruscan bronze work up close and to understand the collecting networks that moved antiquities between Italy and the rest of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. It appeals to both specialists and general audiences interested in ancient Italy.
