Hokusai at Palazzo Bonaparte: a deep dive into Japanese art

From 27 March to 29 June 2026, Palazzo Bonaparte in central Rome presents an exhibition dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai. The show brings together more than 200 works from the National Museum in Krakow and traces the artist's development across his long career in Ukiyo-e.

Highlights

The exhibition combines iconic prints and contextual objects that illustrate Hokusai's breadth. Key attractions include:

  • The Great Wave off Kanagawa and the celebrated views of Mount Fuji;
  • the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series and Hokusai's distinctive Manga sketches;
  • over 180 contextual items, such as rare books, kimono, armor, musical instruments and everyday objects from Japan.

Why visit

This exhibition goes beyond a selection of prints: it reveals Hokusai's capacity to turn ordinary scenes into images of movement and emotional tension. It is also a rare chance to see works usually exhibited abroad and to appreciate the Japanese influence on modern European art.

Practical information

  • Dates: 27 March – 29 June 2026
  • Venue: Palazzo Bonaparte, central Rome (near Piazza Venezia)
  • Works on display: more than 200 pieces, mainly from the National Museum in Krakow

For opening hours, ticketing, and guided tours, check the exhibition's official channels or authorized ticket sellers. Advance booking is recommended for weekends and peak days.

Visitor tips

  • Allow extra time to read labels and appreciate the sequence of rooms;
  • Check for related talks or special events scheduled during the exhibition;
  • If possible, choose quieter time slots (morning or late afternoon) for a more contemplative visit.

This exhibition is a major event for lovers of Japanese art and anyone interested in the visual languages that shaped global modernity.
