Hernica Saxa bids for Italian Capital of Culture 2028

The towns of Anagni, Alatri, Ferentino and Veroli have formed the Hernica Saxa initiative to compete for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2028. The candidature dossier, led by Antonio Ribezzo and endorsed by the local mayors, will be officially presented with a proclamation on March 18 at the Ministry of Culture.

The plan aims to enhance the historical roots and widespread heritage of the Ciociaria area through shared governance, integrated archives and museums, and digital innovation measures.

  • Cultural aims: digitize at least 30% of material and immaterial cultural assets and establish a Territorial Digital Archive; create a Virtual Museum of the Ernican Cities and seek UNESCO recognition for the megalithic walls.
  • Key heritage sites: the Crypt of San Magno in Anagni, Alatri's monumental megalithic walls, the recently restored Roman theatre in Ferentino, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Salome in Veroli.
  • Events and reopenings: the archaeological museum in Alatri will reopen on May 16 for the European Night of Museums; an international folklore festival in August; the Palio delle 4 Porte in September.
  • Funding and economy: a financing plan of €5,000,000 (with an expected split of 40% Anagni, 20% each for the other towns), €400,000 from the Lazio Region, €300,000 from private donors, plus €40 million from the PNRR and additional Jubilee and EU funds.

The candidature emphasizes culture as a driver of economic development and social cohesion for a territory claiming 2,500 years of shared history. If chosen, Hernica Saxa intends to deliver a widespread calendar of initiatives, new museum pathways and digital tools to improve access and visitor experience.
