Pertosa-Auletta Caves: a journey into the heart of the earth

Autore: Redazione 21/08/2025 16:16

The Pertosa-Auletta caves seem to belong to a parallel world. Located in the Vallo di Diano, between Basilicata and Campania, this karst system was carved out by water over millions of years and offers visitors a unique experience, as the journey begins by navigating an underground river.

The caves extend for over 3,000 meters of tunnels, salt formations, and stalactites and are the only caves in Italy crossed by a navigable waterway. The navigable waterway is the Negro River, which allows visitors to enter the cave aboard a small boat.

However, the experience does not end there; on the contrary, this is only the beginning, and what comes next is even more surprising. In fact, the interior chambers have been slowly shaped by water and wind and are veritable natural theaters. Some cavities are enormous, such as the Grande Sala, which hosts spectacular shows and events thanks to its perfect acoustics. Other caves, on the other hand, tell the story of how the caves were home to prehistoric settlements, proving that they were inhabited thousands of years ago.

Some ancient legends say that the caves were inhabited by spirits and mysterious creatures and that there were connections to other underground worlds inside tunnels. Reality and myth therefore merge in one of Italy's most beautiful sights, where silence and darkness are interrupted only by the flow of water and the rustling of the wind.

There are many guided tours organized inside the caves of Pertosa-Auletta, which are not only a natural attraction but also a center for research and promotion of the area. The guided tours are accompanied by underground theatrical performances, educational tours, and tastings, combining the mystery of the cave mentioned above with the gastronomic tradition of Basilicata.

It is a true multisensory experience. The feel of wet rocks, the sight of stalactites and natural spectacles, the smell of water wetting the surfaces, the sound of the river dripping. The caves of Pertosa-Auletta are not only a place to explore, but a hidden world that tells the story of Basilicata and the legends that have found their home there.
